As I’ve continued on my quest for environmental jobs in Oregon,
I stumbled upon this project conducted by the Oregon Environmental Council

What’s in my makeup bag?

Oregon Environmental Council, women's health, what's in my makeup bag, makeup carcinogens

This .pdf report,
which I highly recommend you review,
is the product of a survey of over 1,000 women from Portland State University.

The results, which were summarized on the OEC website,
are a frightening reminder of the subtle ways in which society grossly undervalues of the health of women:

  • These women use an average of 10 personal care products a day, most of which contain toxic chemicals

  • Many of those chemicals are linked to hormone disruption, cancer and other long-term irreversible health impacts

  • Because of a broken oversight system, these personal care products are not adequately tested or regulated, and manufacturers aren’t required to list all ingredients on their labels

————————————-

Pretty scary? Right?
And 10 products? I believe my accurate count would be roughly 37.
Because, I have a serious addiction.

Even if you DON’T wear makeup, this study includes any type of personal care product.
Toothpaste, deodorant, soap.
{Please tell me that you use at least one of these.}

Do you realize what this OEC report suggests?
Even if you are an ‘au natural’ beauty, you are exposed to carcinogens on the daily.
It’s wrong.

It only takes a minute, and there’s something you can do about it:

Because it’s all fun and games, until someone dies of lip gloss induced cancer.

{flavors of fall: part I}

Standard

This morning I woke up to an overcast sky.
I wasn’t even mad.
Sedating my usual cloud-induced anxiety were my Frye boots and Pashmina Scarf.

Which made me think back to expanding on my Fall Fetish post,
there are plenty of consumer goods, social outings and crafty-activities
which *deserve* to be spotlighted in all their fall-complimenting splendor.

Since I’m a makeup junkie,
I’ll let cosmetics kick-off a series of posts
highlighting my favorite products, foods, and places for fall.

Enjoy!
